Iconic New Jersey house, split by Sandy, demolished by owner. It appeared on the cover of Newsweek, a symbol of the powerful storm’s devastation. But the owners of this Union Beach home say it’s too expensive to save. Brian Thompson was there Friday as it was demolished, and spoke to the owner, who vows to rebuild.

Peacock! We like covering peacock stories around here, but this one is really interesting. The brightly-colored bird’s been hanging around Kew Gardens, Queens, stomping around lawns and flying up on roofs. But nobody knows for sure where it came from — no zoos have reported a missing peacock or peahen, and nobody’s tried to claim it.

Boom. The HBO show Boardwalk Empire staged an explosion near their Greenpoint studios Thursday night. The city has been seeing a boom in local television and production. Watch your step. A subway staircase in Sunset Park has been tripping up passengers for months, and a filmmaker who’s frequently stumbled decided to find out why. His video documenting the frequent slips on the stairs went viral, causing the MTA to investigate. It turns out the stair is about an inch higher than the rest.
